A conditional directional distance function approach for measuring regional environmental efficiency: Evidence from UK regions
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper, by using conditional directional distance functions as introduced by Simar and Vanhems [J. Econometrics 166 (2012) 342-354] modifies the model by Färe and Grosskopf [Eur. J. Operat. Res. 157 (2004) 242-245], examines the link between regional environmental efficiency and economic growth. The proposed model using conditional directional distance functions incorporates the effect of regional economic growth on regions’ environmental efficiency levels. The results from the UK regional data reveal that economic growth has a negative effect on regions’ environmental performance up to a certain GDP per capita level, where after that point the effect becomes positive. This indicates the existence of a Kuznets type relationship between the UK regions’ environmental performance and economic growth. JEL classification: C14; C6; Q5; R1

Complete Closest-Target Based Directional FDH Measures of Efficiency in DEA
In this paper, we aim to overcome three major shortcomings of the FDH (Free Disposal Hull) directional distance function through developing two new, named Linear and Fractional CDFDH, complete FDH measures of efficiency. To accomplish this, we integrate the concepts of similarity and FDH directional distance function. We prove that the proposed measures are translation invariant and unit invari...

Data envelopment analysis is a method for evaluating the relative efficiency of a collection of decision making units. The DEA classic models calculate each unit’s efficiency in the best condition, meaning that finds a weight that the DMU is at its maximum efficiency. In this paper, utilizing the directional distance function model in the presence of undesirable outputs, the efficiency of each ...
متن کاملProbabilistic Characterization of Directional Distances
In productivity analysis, the performance of production units is measured through the distance of the individual decision making units (DMU) to the technology which is defined as the frontier of the production set. Most of the existing methods, Farrell-Debreu and Shephard radial measures (input or output oriented) and hyperbolic distance functions, rely on multiplicative measures of the distanc...
متن کاملThe directional hybrid measure of efficiency in data envelopment analysis
The efficiency measurement is a subject of great interest. The majority of studies on DEA models have been carried out using radial or non-radial approaches regarding the application of DEA for the efficiency measurement. This paper, based on the directional distance function, proposes a new generalized hybrid measure of efficiency under generalized returns to scale with the existence of both r...
متن کاملScale directional distance function and its application to the measurement of eco-efficiency in the manufacturing sector
Directional distance function (DDF) is a recognized technique for measuring efficiency while incorporating undesirable outputs. This approach allows for desirable outputs to be expanded while undesirable outputs are contracted simultaneously. A drawback of the DDF approach is that the direction vector to the production boundary is fixed arbitrarily, which may not provide the best efficiency mea...
